WD RED Plus are CMR Drives best for NAS

WD RED Plus are CMR Drives best for NAS
If you want to avoid SMR shingled drives make sure you buy the PLUS version. WD RED are SMR Shingled Drives. These will work in a NAS if matched with the same in a RAID 1 or 2 array. Personally I would not use them. WD RED PLUS are CMR conventional tracks, these are the better drives for a rock solid NAS. I have had 2 WD RED CMR older drives in a 2 Bay NAS for over 6 years, quiet and faultless. These have now been transferred to a QNAP 4 BAY NAS along with the 2 new WD RED PLUS drives I have just purchased. As you can see from the photos, the drives are new in original well packaged WD Boxes with suspended holders, silica gel and fixing screws. Once installed you can see from the photos and the SMART info, they are EFRX (CMR) drives with only the 2 hours use they have been in the NAS. All in all very pleased with Amazon and the purchase.

Nice new 4TB external disk to replace a faulty 10-year old 3TB. I was able to hot-swap it easily in my 4-bay QNAP home server. No issues at all. I always choose the Red Plus given the constant use and the longevity. Arrived promptly via Royal Mail Tracked and well-packaged in a ton of bubble wrap. Exactly what I needed.

I have of these 24 drives in a NAS that has been running for 15-9 years, and have to say they have been very reliable to date. In that time, I've only needed to replace a small number of drives, well below what I was expecting (I still have a number of 15 year old drives), despite having them in a location that in the summer should ideally be much cooler. They are reliable, perform well and have survived the test of time.

For now, I only use this specific model given my experience. There may be other makes and models that work just as well, however I have been happy with the Red Pros to date, especially for a small office NAS solution. I just wish that after all this time, their prices would have reduced more significantly ;-).

It definitely seems to sound louder than an identical WD Pro 18tb I purchased 3 weeks ago for some reason.
There is a noticeable rattle sound when the drive is in read/write operation, whereas the other drive is silent. Installed in a PC case it is not so audible.
However, it is operating perfectly, and I am not expecting any reliability issues in the future.

When it comes to mechanical hard drives, you can't get much better then Western Digital, they've been in the game a long time and have a fine tradition of producing fast, quality drives backed up by superb warranty (although I've heard that it's no longer for 5yrs). I've had Maxtor and Seagate drives but since buying a WD Caviar Black, then two WD 10,000 rpm VelociRaptors, I haven't looked back. I bought a pair of WD Red 3TB NAS drives almost 2 years ago to compliment the Synology DS215j. Incidentally, they show up as 2.68TB when installed! I'm no techie but I know that it's not unusual for hard drive capacity to be less than marketed for some obscure technical reason.

Although OEM, the drives arrived properly packed and in sealed anti-static bags. Installation was a breeze, the DS215j did all the work and had them up and running in moments. So far I've not had a problem with these drives. They're reliable, no temperature issues and practically silent in operation. In terms of speed, they wake up from sleep in about 2-3 secs, and transfer data fast enough for my needs which is mainly archiving RAW files. I'm very happy with them and chances are you will be too.

I am running four of these drives in my PC connected to an Adaptec RAID controller. As these drives spin a little bit slower I was expecting transfer rates to suffer, but I was pleasantly surprised by how fast these drives are.

And so far, they work as a RAID array flawlessly.

The four I have are installed in a Silverstone four drive hot-swap bay at the front of my computer and I can barely hear them.

I was so impressed with them that I have just purchased another four of them to expand my RAID array even further.

UPDATE. I bought another four of these drives (as mentioned above) and one of them was Dead on Arrival. The system can see it, but it is reported as being 0GB in size with 0GB free space. I have tried this faulty drive on two separate hard drive controllers and get the same result. This isn't the first time I have had a drive turn up dead on arrival but it is very rare.

I figured the Red 6TB NAS hard disk was best for price vs. storage size. I opted for the retail box over the OEM, as the retail packaging would give more protection over the OEM (though hard drive packaging has improved over the years). Wasn't a lot more expensive.

It's currently taking up one bay in a TerraMaster F2-220 2-Bay NAS Drive Enclosure. It and the WD Red are performing perfectly, no lag, no heat or noise issues. It has replaced and consolidated data spread over three Samsung 2TB and one Seagate 4TB drive, all of which are working perfectly, yet none of which had been backed up.

Now all I need to do is save up for another 6TB, 'cos that's an awful lot of eggs in one basket at the moment.
